Job Description
Job Summary:
 
The Ship Alteration (SHIPALT) / Temporary Alteration (TEMPALT) Development Business Area is seeking a Mechanical Engineer in its Middletown, RI location to support development of Technical Data Packages (TDP) for temporary and permanent installations on various submarine and surface ship classes in the fleet. The successful candidate would be expected to develop mechanical alteration drawings in CAD software, design mechanical foundations/kits for Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) equipment and electronic cabinet enclosures, complete 3D modeling and manufacturing/assembly drawings in Solidworks, perform mechanical analysis (e.g. stress, thermal, hydrodynamic, vibration) using hand calculations and Finite Element Analysis (FEA )software, review Ship Installation Drawings (SIDs), support environmental testing, perform material procurement and QA inspections, and complete ship checks (infrequent, as required) at various naval stations. The applicant may also be asked to work with other team members to provide system engineering assistance with existing Non-Propulsion Electronic Systems (NPES) in the fleet by completing design reviews of obsolete COTS equipment/components, developing test plans and procedures for compatibility testing, and composing Engineering Change Proposals (ECP). Collaboration with various other team members is required and may include electrical engineers, RF engineers, software engineers, logisticians, & technicians. A small amount of travel may be required to various naval stations to support system installation and ship checks.
 
Education and Experience:
 
A Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering is the minimum education requirement for this position. The ideal candidate would have a minimum of two years of experience. 
 
The successful candidate would be team oriented, personable, detail oriented, and possess proficient technical writing and oral communication skills. Experience with SolidWorks and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is required. Prior experience with Non-Propulsion Electronic Systems (NPES) for Virginia, Los Angeles, Seawolf and/or Ohio class submarines is not necessary but may be preferred.
 
Must be a US Citizen. The position will require obtaining and maintaining a DOD Secret security clearance.
 
Salary dependent upon experience.
