Behavioral Health Specialist III

Summary:

Under the direction of Clinical Nurse Manager (Inpatient)/Program Director (Partial) and Unit Charge RN the Behavioral Health Specialist III (BHS III) is responsible for providing care and safety to children and adolescents as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team. The BHS III is responsible for input into the formulation of the day-to-day schedule and structure of a therapeutic milieu and the implementation observation and documentation of this program under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

 

Responsibilities:

In addition to the duties and responsibilities of a Behavioral Health Specialist I & II:

Responsible for milieu management i.e. coordinate milieu treatment oversee implementation of behavior management plans monitor documentation of BHS I�s and II�s in electronic medical record.

In concert with Clinical Nurse Manager/Program Director supervise Behavioral Health Specialists regarding job performance and achievement of expected professional development goals. Establish goals for milieu staff performance and professional growth.

Responsible for the orientation of new staff including the development of orientation materials and experiences pertaining to the milieu.

Supports milieu staff instruction in the techniques of crises management.

Responsible for designing and implementing in-service programs for new and existing milieu staff.

In concert with Clinical Nurse Manager/Program Director recommend and carry out hospital disciplinary policies as necessary.

Interview prospective staff members for employment. Evaluate qualifications and recommend qualified individuals for consideration.

Participate in ongoing process of consultation with treatment team family outside agencies etc.

Responsible for scheduling milieu staff i.e. vacations personal days and earned days etc.

 Observe all hospital rules and regulations.

 Perform other related duties as required.

 Acts as a liaison between Behavioral Health Specialists and Unit RNs throughout assigned shift.

 While an individual is hired to work on a particular program they may at times be asked to perform comparable duties in other clinical settings throughout the hospital system as program needs arise.

 

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Baccalaureate Degree in a Human Service field preferred. Other education and experience considered and may be substituted for educational requirements at the discretion of the Hiring Manager. Must demonstrate aptitude and willingness to learn role related skills.

Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

Participates in BHS Career Ladder within 6 months of appointment to this position.

EXPERIENCE:

Over three years in Milieu Therapy or a related field with demonstrated competence in utilization of childcare techniques including supervisory and administrative ability.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Performs independently within Program policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to supervisor where clarification of Program policies and procedures may be required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Supervises up to 10 FTEs.
